Malmö Academic Choir and Orchestra

Music at Malmö University Sweden

Malmö Academic Choir and Orchestra is recognised as one of the region’s most prominent ensembles. Both the choir and orchestra were started in 2000, and are known for their high level of musicianship, engaging concerts, and progressive repertoire.

The choir and orchestra aim to provide an environment in which singers and instrumentalists can practice music as part of an exceptionally skilled and diverse group. Malmö Academic Choir and Orchestra play a host of concerts throughout the year, as well as representing the University at events such as the Annual Celebration and doctoral award ceremonies. Their programme also includes festivals and reoccurring events, such as the Christmas and Lucia concerts, which have become well-loved traditions and always draw a large local audience.

Each summer, Malmö Academic Choir and Orchestra go on an international tour, financed by their concerts throughout the year. Previous destinations have included Brazil, China, South Africa and Cuba. The tours are an important part of the ensemble’s social life.

Malmö University Choir and Orchestra is open to anyone. At the moment, the ensemble consists mainly of the students, staff and alumni from Malmö University, as well as students from other institutions in the Öresund region. The orchestra has approximately 50 members, while the choir has 40. Both are founded and led by Daniel Hansson, Conductor and Artistic Director at Malmö University. Members of the choir and orchestra are heavily involved in the practical organisation of the group’s activities.
