Grades, exams and evaluation

Students during exam

In all forms of education, the students’ learning is assessed based on the courses educational goals, which can be found in the syllabus. Based on this, the student gets a grade after each examination. The grading is carried out by an examiner appointed by the university.

Assessments and exams

This assessment of the students’ performance is made though a written, oral and/or practical examination. As a student, you might recognise this as different forms of exams.

The exams are constructed in such a way that it should be possible to assess the performance of each student in relation to the educational goals of the course, including in group-based activities. In the course syllabus you can find out what type of exams there will be on that course.

If you need special support

Exceptions from the assessment methods stated in the syllabus may be granted in special circumstances, for example if you are a student with functional variations or disiblities. Students with functional variations and/or disabilities should be informed of these special circumstances at the start of each course or programme.

If required, you can submit an application for an individually adapted examination to the examiner. You can do this together with the university’s disability service. They can then recommend an individually adapted examination, but ultimately it’s up to the examiner.

Examination of practicum placement/internships

If a study programme or course includes a practicum placement/internship, then specific rules may apply with regard to the total number of examination opportunities. These rules shall be clearly stated in the course/study programme syllabus. At least two opportunities must be provided. The supervisor’s role in assessing students shall be clearly statedin the course syllabus. If a student is at risk of receiving a failing grade for their practicum placement/internship, they should be made aware of this at the earliest opportunity.

Reevaluation of grades

At the request of a student, the examiner has to provide a written justification of their grade.

The examiner should also reassess the grades if the student makes a request. If the examiner finds that the original grade is incorrect, the grade should be changed. Even without a request from the student, the examiner can change the grade if he or she discovers that it is incorrect.

In both cases, the examiner is not allowed to lower a grade, except in the event of misleading behaviour on the part of the student. Any decision which has obvious errors due to typos, miscalculations or similar may be corrected in accordance with the regulations in the Administrative Procedure Act.

If you have passed a course or part of it, you cannot take a re-examination to get a higher grade.

Exceptions to this rule are only allowed for natural science/technical access programmes and the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Programme. Such cases are stated in the course syllabus.

New examiner and supervisor

If you have failed the same exam twice, with the same examiner, a new examiner can be appointed. This is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance. This is unless there are reasons preventing this appointment.

A student who has failed a practicum placement (VFU)/internship has the right to change supervisor and examiner, unless there are particular reasons preventing such an exchange.

Changing supervisor and/or examiner is done at the request of the student and under the circumstances mentioned above.
