20th Anniversary celebrations go off with a bang!

Could there have been a better way to celebrate Malmö University’s 20th anniversary? The day showcased the academic values we hold most dear with a programme of talks, followed by an evening which raised the roof with festivities, falafel and fireworks.

Quayside party fireworks

On August 31, 2018, 20 years to the day that Malmö University was born, current and former students, staff and honoured guests gathered to both reflect and look to the future.

The quayside surrounding the University’s Niagara building was transformed into a festival site, with live bands, games organised by students, and food and drink.

In reference to the significance of the date, 2018 falafels were served and musicians, including members of the Academic Choir and Orchestra, arrived on three separate boats at 20.18. Their performance gloriously climaxing with a spectacular firework display.

The Minister for Higher Education and Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson and Heléne Fritzon, the Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy, joined Vice-Chancellor Kerstin Tham, current and former members of University management, and city and regional dignitaries to celebrate the momentous occasion.

The day’s preceding academic programme, with three parallel seminars on education, research and collaboration, drew a full house.

An exhibition, showing the timeline of Malmö University highlighted the landmark dates and events of the institution, and a Memory Bank, including contributions from visitors, lent the occasion poignancy and a chance to reflect.
