Thesis Writing Group Checklist

To discuss at the introductory meeting:

  • Short round of introductions. Why do you want to join the group?
  • Decide on a date for the first meeting
  • Decide on a place for the first meeting
  • Make a list of everyone’s emails and phone numbers; create a Facebook group etc.
  • Decide on how to let the group know if someone cannot make it to a meeting.

Suggestions for discussion points for future meetings:

Introduction 

  • Tell the rest of the group a little bit about yourselves and what you are studying.
  • Introduce your essay topics to each other.

Routines

  • How often, when, where and for how long should the group meet?
  • Keeping time. How do you start and end meetings on time? How should you keep track of time?
  • Routines for absences.

Contact and communication

  • How should you communicate with each other during and between meetings?
  • Forms of mutual support and reflection?

Responsibilities and roles

  • How should responsibilities be assigned in the group?
  • Do you need formal roles in the group, such as chairperson, secretary?
  • Should roles rotate?

Leaving and disagreements

  • How do you handle someone leaving or disagreements in the group?

Talk about the thesis writing. Ideas for discussion topics

  • Share your feelings. What is hard, what is positive?
  • Worries, challenges of thesis writing.
  • Share tips on what to do if you get stuck or find it hard to get started.
  • Whom in your networks could you get feedback or ideas from?
  • How do you get the most out of your meetings with your supervisors?
  • What happens after you have finished your thesis?
  • hat happens if you should not finish your thesis?

Remember that it is important to listen and support each other; but you do not have to solve each other’s problems.
