Citizenship can be described as the legal bond between the state and the individual. The bond between the state and the individual provides both parties with rights and obligations towards one-another. This is something that many of us take for granted in our daily lives. However, approximately 15 million people across the world are stateless – over 30.000 being located within Sweden. Even though many thousands of whom are born in Sweden they cannot acquire any nationality. During today’s public lecture our two lecturers will discuss stateless globally and in a Scandinavian context, as well as current research regarding statelessness.

  • Jason Tucker – Ph.D. in Political Science. Jason researches statelessness, refugees and migration. He is a Post-doctoral researcher working at the Malmö Institute of Studies of Migration, Diversity, and Welfare (https://www.mah.se/mim).

  • Zahra Al Barazi – Senior Researcher at the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (http://www.institutesi.org/). She specializes in statelessness and forced migration, statelessness in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as gender discrimination in nationality law.
