Informal economy in the urban space

Abstract:

The concept of informal economy was for long understood as connected to economic and social processes in third world countries and had part of strong development discourses. This has changed and informal economy is also now recognized as a phenomenon of not only global cities but also more generally in the West. This seminar aims to discuss informal economy in a wide geographical, theoretical and empirical perspective. Such a broad perspective includes: informal practice and exchange of service, information, labour and goods, unregulated labour and tax fraud etc. But can also be discussed in relation to informalisation in a broader way such as related to the housing market, the labour market and social and economic mobility/immobility.

The seminar starts with five interventions (10-15 minutes each) that will give examples on research on informal economy.
