What roles do public spaces have in times of political upheaval? Medea talks on February 13 on the topic of Tahrir square, Cairo, with Marwa Dabaieh, architect and researcher at the department of Urban Studies, Malmö University.

Public spaces can play important roles in times of political upheaval. In gatherings, political powers are challenged, and opposing forces are made visible. Through the uses of art and media, the challenges can be made even stronger.

In the talk, Marwa Dabaieh will discuss how we best can understand the role of power and the uses of urban space. She will also look upon the interrelationship between art, media, and urban dynamics in revolutionary cities. The specific focus will be on Tahrir square in Egypt during the Egyptian revolution in 2011 and after. Through the talk, she will show how the study of urban conflict can contribute to a better understanding of urban justice.

Marwa Dabaieh is an architect. For more than 15 years, she has worked in the field of sustainable architectural conservation and environmental design, and since 2011 she has been part of several initiatives looking at urban dynamics in revolutionary cities during the Arab Springs. Marwa mainly applies transdisciplinary approaches in her research work. She received The Elna Bengtsson Foundation’s prize for scientific research in 2012 for her PhD project. As a practitioner, she has participated in several design projects in Egypt, the MENA region and Europe. Currently she is a researcher and senior lecturer at Malmö University working on eco-cycle refugee shelter design in Sweden..
