Two of a kind? - integration politics in Denmark and Sweden

Denmark and Sweden are both high-income welfare states, characterised by equality, trust and strong institutions. Although they are similar in many ways, they differ greatly when it comes to how they deal with immigration, integration and ideas surrounding citizenship. In Sweden, citizenship is primarily a question of equal opportunities. It is relatively easy for immigrants to obtain a Swedish passport and the general societal expectation is that most people, including the higher number of refugees that Sweden has accepted, want to contribute to society. In Denmark, on the other hand, citizenship is increasingly about obligations and duties. These must be learned in order to become deserving of rights and even to be allowed to stay in the country and be eligible for citizenship at all. But why are these neighbouring countries so different? And does this difference affect the integration of migrants in these two nations? These are some of the questions that Professor Per Mouritsen, a Danish visiting researcher at Malmö University, is focusing on.

The lecture is a part of the serie Inside the mind of a professor - meet and mingle with Malmö University researchers. It is free of charge and everyone is welcome. There will be beer, wine, coffe, the and snacks for sale.
