Psychosocial risks are perceived as more challenging than other risks by many organisations and so there is a growing interest in comparing strategies and policies on psychosocial risks in European countries. In this context, the main results of a research project conducted by BAuA will be presented. A qualitative case study approach was used to gain a deeper understanding of processes and actors involved in the management of psychosocial risks in Denmark, Sweden, Spain and the UK. In-depth interviews with key Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) players in 10 ten organizations were conducted, supplemented by interviews with national experts and the analysis of relevant documents. Commonalities and differences in terms of OSH „cultures“ were found among the countries. In addition, preliminary results of an ongoing research project on the validation of the Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) questionnaire in Germany will be presented.

Michael Ertel, sociologist, has been working as a researcher at the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Berlin for 25 years. His main interests are in the field of organisational, national and european policies on work-related stress.
