The core aim of ECOS is to help users get the most out of their future Internet of Things technology. We anticipate situations where several connected components combine into temporary collections of functions and services. We refer to such collections as “emergent configurations” – they are generally hard to overview, and they tend to change unpredictably. Research is needed on system architectures, information models and self-adaptive techniques as well as on interaction design principles in order to support users in understanding, appropriating and effectively using emergent configurations.

The project involves experimental work in two cases, where the first is addressing the situation of driver and passengers in a car. The direction of the second case is decided later in the project, based on research needs identified in the first case. Developing a rapid prototyping platform by combining existing technologies for information logistics, sensing and mesh connectivity is another early project activity.
