Work-life balance and well-being among highly skilled migrants within the health sector in Agder

Demographic challenges related to an aging population and migration, has led to an increase in expenditure in the health sector. On a national level, projections suggest a shortfall of up until 52 000 health workers in 2030. The shortfall is related to both increased age-related departure within the sector, and dropout in Secondary school. Hence, there is an increasing need to recruit health care personnel from the global labour market. The situation raises issues related to wellbeing and the strains of being mobile in a transnational life. These conditions have not been given much attention in the international literature on internationalisation of the labour market of health care personnel.

This study focuses upon everyday life challenges encountered by migrant physicians. This is a highly skilled professional group of central societal importance, usually perceived as a freely moving labour-élite within Europe. At the same time, physicians encounter severe difficulties in managing their work-life balance. By making a pilot study in Agder, put into a comparative regional Nordic perspective, a basis for a more comprehensive application for national and European funding will be made possible. This proposal is innovative by combining migration-studies with looking at high-skilled migration from other aspects than the dominant brain drain discussion. The project is in accord with RFFs thematic areas internationalization of labour and society, and migration, mobility and diversity. Interviews will be conducted with physicians from EU and non-EU countries to investigate their professional and migrant trajectories, as well as their subjective perceptions of their overall well-being.
