The project was financially supported by the KK-stiftelsen. It started on May 1, 2007 and was restricted to a three-year period. The project has been performed in cooperation between Arcam AB, Anordica AB and Malmö högskola. The project has also been collaborating with (1) Materials Analysis Centre at Chalmers (MACH) in respect of using large-scale instruments such as TEM XRD and SEM; (2) Division of Solid Mechanics at Lunds Tekniska högskola in respect of research education (PhD student education) and employing test machines for evaluating mechanical properties of the EBM produced materials.

In Malmö University, the project has collaborated with School of Health and Society and the group of Oral Biology in School of Odontology. The project has also been deeply concerned by the colleagues who have been involved in the field of EBM materials and EBM technology in Sweden, for example Mid Sweden University, company Linderg Implants AB, and Volvo Aero Corporation etc.

The goal of the project is to develop an understanding of the interrelations between the processing parameters, the microstructures and the mechanical properties of the biomaterial parts produced by electron beam melting process. The interrelation between the surface morphology and the biocompatibility of the parts produced, and the surface properties after manufacturing are also topics of interest.

Characterizations of the implant parts produced under a variety of processing parameters, for example a variety of beam current, beam focus offset, scan speed and scan length etc, have been performed in respects of surface roughness and microstructures. Confocal microscopy, SEM, TEM, and XRD have been employed to characterise the surface morphology and the fine-scale microstructures in the EBM parts.

Evaluations for the mechanical properties, particularly the fatigue properties, have been performed to study the stiffness and fatigue properties of the titanium parts.

The research is ongoing after the three-year period mainly by the PhD student Adnan Safdar. His research will concentrate on the following two respects: 1. Tensile property and fatigue property of the EBM produced Ti-6Al-4V. TEM microstructure evaluation of deformed materials and fractography analysis will be performed to investigate the deformation behavior of the EBM materials during fatigue. 2. Modeling and simulation of diffusion of Al and V elements and phase transformation in EBM fabricated Ti-6Al-4V. “Phase field” program will be the main tool for the modeling.

The research is expected to result in a optimization of processing parameters for producing high performance titanium parts with controllable microstructures and improved properties.

Outcomes: The outcomes of the project are listed below:
