Eligibility Requirements

The basic requirements for application to study abroad are:

  • The applicant should have completed at least one year’s full-time study at Malmö University (60hp)
  • The applicant should be an active student or research student at Malmö University at the time of the application.
  • The applicant should have, in the previous semester, completed at least 75% of the studies that he/she was registered for, unless there are special circumstances for not meeting the requirement
  • The applicant is a suitable candidate for study abroad, and considered to be a good “ambassador” for Malmö University
  • The exchange studies should be accreditable towards the applicant's degree at Malmö University.
  • Studies at the host university should be on a full-time basis and the study period should be for at least 3 months (12 weeks)
  • The applicant should have adequate language skills in English or in the language of the host institution (if other than English). See below for further information regarding language and exchange studies. 
  • You can apply for exchange studies even if you study independent courses as long as you fulfill the eligibility requirements. The exchange semester should be accreditable towards your degree at Malmö University, which means that you must attach a study description, in which you describe how you plan to obtain a degree from Malmö University.
  • At the time of the application to the partner university, the applicant must have completed all courses that he or she was registered for during the previous semester. This criteria may vary between faculties/departments, so please double check with your international coordinator where you study..

The student must also accept following to be eligible:

  • After your exchange to complete an evaluation of your experiences for the benefit of future students 
  • After your exchange to participate in exchange study information-sessions to share your experiences
  • For exchange studies within the Erasmus+ programme undertake two language tests: one before the exchange and one in conjunction with the end of the exchange period. 

In addition to the above basic requirements, the following applies for the Erasmus+ programme for distance students:

  • For distance students is a requirement that you are citizen of any of the countries participating in Erasmus+ or that you live in Sweden.

Eligibility Requirements for Linnaeus-Palme:

In addition to the basic requirements the following also apply:

  • the applicant is a Swedish citizen
  • or have a permanent residence permit (PUT) in Sweden

Language requirements for exchange studies

All exchange places belong to a mobility programme as below. See each faculty/department’s announcement to see what applies to each specific exchange place. The following generally applies:

Language Requirements for Bilateral places (generally all universities in Australia, Asia and North America)
 

If nothing else is indicated in the announcement, the following applies:

  • A certified copy of your Swedish Upper Secondary School grades, with Swedish Upper Secondary School Diploma English course B with minimum grade VG

  • A certified copy of your Swedish Upper Secondary School grades, with Swedish Upper Secondary School Diploma English course 6 with grade A, B or C.

  • A certified copy of an authorised testing agency: TOEFL or IELTS (test not older than 2 years)
    The TOEFL/IELTS score must meet the host university’s requirement (see “Language requirement” at the host university’s homepage)

  • Other qualifications, in accordance with the partner university's language requirements, can in some cases be accepted. In these cases this is clearly stated in the comments field in the announcement. If nothing else is specified regarding language requirements, only the qualifications listed above are valid.
  • If a valid certificate/exam-result cannot be shown at the time of application, it is required that the student write a Language Requirement Fulfilment Plan explaining how the language requirements will be met before the exchange studies. The information should include specific dates and details regarding TOEFL/IELTS tests you plan on taking. Please note that a valid certificate/test result should be handed in at the beginning of the semester BEFORE the exchange semester

Language requirements within Erasmus+

  • The applicant should have adequate language skills in English or in the language of the host institution (if other than English)
  • For some exchange places the partner university may at a later stage ask for formal qualifications in the language of tuition.

Language requirements within Linneus-Palme

  • The applicant should have adequate language skills in English or in the language of the host institution (if other than English).

Language requirements within Nordplus

  • The applicant should have adequate language skills in English or in the language of the host institution, normally Danish, Norwegian or Swedish.
