Our first century – The LO-section of Malmo 100 years

LO_Malmo_minnesskrift_2013-1The Malmö Trade Union Movements Central-organization was established in August 28, 1913 to improve the situation of Malmö's working population.

They came together to stand strong and to demand the right to a safe work environment, 8-hour day and a wage that you could live on.

Natural rights of today, such as universal and equal suffrage for men and women were still a few years away.

There was peace in 1913 but the following year, millions of young men were killed in the First World War trenches. Therefore, one of the trade union movement's main requirements was always to keep the peace. There is no progress and no prosperity without peace.

The idea to collaborate between the different unions gave added strength to pursue common interests.

In 1913 the labor movement in Malmö had built a People's House where you could hold meetings and parties, the movement had created a People's Park for the party and politics and its own workers' newspaper in Arbetet (The Work) . Pioneers like August Palm and Axel Danielsson had been active in Malmö.

2013 the LO section of Malmo is 100 years old. This booklet is about the union movement's success story in Malmo. A story about belief, struggle, conflict and joy.
