About the Faculty of Education and Society
About us
The Faculty of Education and Society consists of six broad and multidisciplinary areas of academic interest. All undergraduate teaching, research and further education is organised under six headings:
Children, youth and society specializes in the field of childhood and youth studies from a wide range of disciplines, such as education, sociology, psychology, language studies and historical perspectives.
Culture, languages and media studies how knowledge and meaning is created in linguistic contexts, is transferred by various media and gives expression to the social and cultural identity of people.
Individual and society is interested in the interplay between the individual and the society to which the individual belongs. Focus is placed on: human living conditions, norms and values from local, regional and global perspectives, and views of democracy, power, sustainable development, peace and conflict.
Nature, environment and society develops knowledge on how the study of mathematics, natural sciences and social sciences - and the cooperation between these areas – can contribute to an increase in the extent to which citizens can participate in and develop the society to which they belong.
Sport science studies sports and leisure from a broad perspective in order to understand sports and leisure as multi-dimensioned social and cultural phenomena, as well as the processes that change them.
School development and leadership works with school development in relation to leadership. The questions most relevant for this department are, amongst others, the connection between the school and university and between the practical situation and academic education; the relationship between leadership and school development and between education, school and society; special needs education.

International courses in teacher education
There are a number of single-subject courses of 15 ECTS each, available in English. Several of these international courses include school placement. Internships can be organised through one of several international schools.
The courses are listed here.
International exchange courses for students and lecturers
In 2006, 24 students from Malmö spent 12 weeks or more at foreign universities. Such exchanges take place with some 50 educational institutions in Australia, Europe, the Nordic Countries, South America, North America, China, South Korea and Africa. Education students also have the chance to complete part of their practical programs overseas. From the autumn term of 2007, all members of staff can conduct study visits or “job shadowing” at a partner university or company in Europe.
Developing greater understanding of developing countries
Minor Field Studies (MFS) is a program directed at undergraduate students of the University. The overarching goal of the program is to give students and teachers at Swedish universities and institutes of higher education the possibility to acquire knowledge about developing countries and issues of development, while establishing contact with institutions, organizations and research institutes with this aim. Minor Field Studies is financed by the Swedish aid organisation, SIDA.
The Linnaeus-Palme program works for student and teacher mobility between Swedish educational institutions and developing countries. Teachers and students of Sport Science have exchanges with the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. The department of Culture, Language and Media accepts students of English from Santiago, Chile, and students from all departments of the Malmö School of Education may apply for scholarship places in Santiago. Similar arrangements for student and teacher exchanges in the area of Early Childhood Education are in place with the University of Education in Winneba, Ghana.
Involvement in international projects
Membership in networks such as ETEN (European Teacher Education Network), NETT (Network for the Education and Training of Teachers) and Nordplus give rise to substantial cooperation with universities and schools in many countries.
