Medea hosting a video exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist

2010-11-11

November 17, is the opening day for the exhibition HER with a video work by the internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Candice Breitz in Dockplatsen, at Västra hamnen in Malmö. The exhibition is based on characters of the world famous actress Meryl Streep.

The Video installation HER is presented in a mobile art gallery, called "Mobila rummet", which with its exhibition area of 85 square meters creating a platform for exhibition medium to meet new audiences in unexpected places. Behind the investment is Riksutställningar and the region of Västra Götaland, which work together to bring more visitors to walk to the art. The tour has now come to Malmö and Medea, a centre for New Media at Malmö university, as an organizer and host.

Within the imaginary space of Her (1978-2008), 28 Meryl Streeps, extracted out of films made by the actress over a period of 30 years, meet to discuss their needs, fears and desires. In engaging a series of disparate voices from the same mind, Breitz creates a kaleidoscopic, insightful and witty set of interactions between the many Meryls, interactions that draw to the surface a series of Hollywood-perpetuated clichés about psychology and gendered identity. The voices speak to each other, against each other and over each other. The installation gives an idea of what it means to be a woman of our time, and how a woman is shaped to be one. One of the objectives of the exhibition is to reach people who normally do not go to art, so it is not directed specifically at women. Meryl Streep is a contemporary icon that everyone can relate to and the exhibition's themes as relationship problems, love and betrayal affects everyone.
