Harriet Axelsson and the university’s degree evaluation officers Susanne Sjögren and Mira Markovinovic recently attended a ceremony in Antwerp, Belgium where they received a diploma as proof of the EU award.
- This award is a stamp of quality that shows that we fulfil the requirements the European Commission set for our diploma supplements to comply with the diploma, says Susanna Sjögren.
Thanks to the award, Malmö University will also be mentioned as a “Centre of Excellence” in various European Commission information materials about higher education institutions within the EU.
-It is of course both gratifying and important for us now that we are introducing tuition fees for students from countries outside the EU and EEA, continues Sjögren, who together with colleague Markovinovic developed the university’s request to the commission to award a Diploma Supplement Label.
Easier to evaluate
The background to the so-called diploma supplement is that nowadays more and more college-educated people in Europe are working abroad – both inside and outside the EU. In order to facilitate this mobility across borders, all degrees issued from higher education institutions within the European Union should be accompanied by a diploma supplement.
The diploma supplement is a document that should describe both the contents and the scope of the education that led to the degree and information about the education’s place in the Swedish university system. The thought behind the diploma supplement is that it will be easier for universities, public authorities and employers in different countries to evaluate the education itself and where it stands in comparison to national counterparts.
-Simply put, the purpose of the diploma supplement is that it is easier for university educated people to move between different countries for study or work, says Susanna Sjögren.
The stamp of quality Diploma Supplement Label 2010 is valid from now until 2013 – after that Malmö University needs to re-apply for a review of its diploma supplement.
Apart from Malmö University, Linköping University is the only other Swedish higher education institute that has so far been awarded this honour.
