Welcome to a research seminar with Laura Trott, PhD student in social work at the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen, Italy
Title: Between agency and care: Tensions and paradoxes in the everyday life of unaccompanied refugee minors. An ethnographic approach to field research in a first arrival centre in South Tyrol, Italy
This seminar introduces a qualitative empirical study on the everyday lives of male unaccompanied minor refugees at a first arrival centre in Bolzano, South Tyrol (Südtirol-Alto Adige). The study uses ethnographic approaches to field research and the data collection process consists mainly of on-site observations.
From the field study, it has emerged that the participants are exposed to a series of contradictions and tensions concerning a variety of aspects of their lives. Firstly, their time during flight is typically marked by a need for maturity and autonomy, which vanishes once they receive institutional residential care. The social care and migration system fulfils a role of support and control at the same time further contributing to this tension. Similarly, the minors need to navigate the forging of agency within an unknown structural setting.
These topics are discussed using examples from the field.
The seminar will be held in English.
