The overall aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of TMD pain and headache among adults in the County of Scania with the purpose to better dimension the coming treatment need for patients with TMD pain.
A questionnaire was sent to a randomly selected sample of 10000 individuals living in the region of Scania in Sweden. The questionnaire comprised 58 questions and 2 of those were: Do you have pain in your temples, face, jaws joint or jaws once a week or more? and Do you have pain when you open your mouth wide or chew once a week or more? These two self-reported pain questions constituting TMD pain have earlier been tested among adolescents and had very good reliability and high validity. The questionnaire was answered by 6123 individuals.
The study found a high prevalence of TMD-pain among adults in the county of Scania. A higher prevalence of reported TMD-pain was found in individuals born in another country than Sweden or another Nordic country, being unemployed, retired or were on sick leave compared to other occupations.
