Dental caries is the most common biofilm-induced disease worldwide. Acid-producing and acid-tolerating oral streptococci in biofilms play a central role in caries development. Using biofilm models with purified salivary components, we are exploring the signaling pathways involved in development of acid tolerance in oral streptococci and how such pathways are activated by binding to salivary molecules or acidic environments.
