Systemic & Oral Health

New research is pointing to associations between chronic oral infections, particularly periodontitis and heart and lung diseases, stroke, osteoporosis and low-birth-weight, premature births. "Associations between periodontal disease and diabetes have long been noted". Two themes were emphasised in the first ever report on oral health by the Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service in the year 2000:

- oral health means much more than healthy teeth -
- oral health is integral to general health -
 
This section will present a brief outline of some systemic conditions that are associated with oral health together with selected abstracts of publications.
