Dr Douglas Bratthall
1938 - 2006

We announce with great sadness the passing away of Dr Douglas Bratthall, Project Manager of CAPP and Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Education, Training and Research in Oral Health, Malmö, Sweden, on the 1st of October, 2006. We extend our sincere condolences to Dr Bratthall's family.

Dr Bratthall, was an academic and a methodical researcher and had contributed tremendously to the field of Cariology in many ways. Douglas built up the Department of Cariology, Faculty of Odontology, Malmö, which now has an excellent set of teachers and research workers with national and international impact. He was also an inspiring teacher who had immense patience and teaching skills. He introduced the caries risk assessment computer program Cariogram, invented the Significant Caries Index (SiC Index) for calculating the high caries risk group in a population and designed and presented the Country/Area Profile Programme, CAPP, the WHO oral health database, in the Internet.

We will miss Douglas's wisdom, his friendship and guidance and his fantastic sense of humour. We will miss the lunch time discussions, especially those that ended solving all the problems in the world....
